There are numerous people who see (consensual) pain as a pleasure - its a question of what floats your boat. If you don't you don't. Everyone's different.
I think numerous maybe overstating it rather,unless you are of course referring to your circle of friends?

I looked in a youth slang book and a couple of other references. I haven't found anything. The phrase in one in a series: whatever melts your butter, etc.etc.

A sizeable minority I reckon. You only need to look at the size of the member lists on sites like Informed Consent and British Spanking, most spankers/spankees don't mention their preference to vanilla friends. But like I said if it ain't your thing it ain't, its not important.
As for 'whatever floats your boat' I don't know the age or origin - but I'll put a question up on wordorigins.org and see if anyone does.
